Simon Cowell Updates Fans Following Surgery After Breaking His Back in Bike Accident

Simon Cowell has spoken out after a six-hour back surgery following a biking accident that broke his back on Sunday. The former “American Idol” judge and current judge for “America’s Got Talent” has a new electric bike and tweeted some advice to his fans and supporters: “Some good advice…If you buy an electric trail bike, read the manual before you ride it for the first time. I have broken part of my back. Thank you to everyone for your kind messages.” Cowell was testing the bike at his Malibu, California home in the house’s courtyard when things went awry, a spokesman for Cowell told CNN on Sunday.

The representative told ET that Cowell was doing fine and was under observation. “Simon had a fall from his bike testing his new electric bike in the courtyard at his house in Malibu with his family. He hurt his back and was taken to hospital. He’s doing fine, he’s under observation and is in the best possible hands.” ET also reported that Cowell’s son, Eric, and his brother, Adam were with him at his home when the accident occurred. The doctors said it was a bad injury but that Cowell was very lucky. The rep told ET that the hospital staff at an unspecified hospital “operated overnight (Saturday).”

In addition to keeping his fans posted and thanking well-wishers, Cowell also sent a tweet thanking the doctors and nurses who helped him through the surgery and recovery, calling them, “Some of the nicest people I have ever met.” The 60-year-old was with his family when the accident occurred, his rep said. Apparently, Cowell’s back was broken in a number of places and he was required to undergo the surgery that lasted six hours. Cowell won’t be participating in the live telecasts of “America’s Got Talent” on Tuesday and Wednesday, according to current reports.

On Sunday, his fellow AGT judges Sofia Vergara and Heidi Klum took to Instagram to wish him well and say that they miss their boss. Klum added in a comment, “I’m next to Simon’s trailer… I just wanted to say I miss you Simon and get well soon! It’s very sad.”
