Rescued Mini Horse And Goose Are Inseparable Best Friends

Allow us to introduce you to Hemmingway and Waffles — an unlikely pair of friends who prove that you can get through an ordeal with a good buddy at your side.

In July, officials with the local Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals received reports of negligence taking place at a property in Bucks County, Pennsylvania. Located in the same pen, officials found Waffles, a miniature horse and his extremely protective goose friend named Hemingway.

“They were being kept in filthy conditions without adequate shelter,” Cindy Kelly, director of communications with the Bucks County SPCA (BCSPCA), told The Dodo. “We don’t know how long they lived together, but … right from the start it seemed to us that these two shared a special bond.”

Officials transported Waffles and Hemmingway to the SPCA barn, where they now live together in the same stall. In the months since they arrived, the two have become even closer in their new environment.

“The pair just seem happy to be together and Hemingway especially wants to keep it that way,” Kelly said. “They seem to comfort each other.”

Staffers lucky enough to catch glimpses of the two during a private moment can’t help but be moved by the way Hemmingway and Waffles care for each other, noted Kelly:

And it’s clear that Hemingway is willing to do whatever it takes to protect his friend, who has needed some medical attention since arriving at the SPCA. However, there were occasions where the goose made treating the mini horse a bit more complicated.

“Hemingway just gets protective and he doesn’t want to get split up from his friend,” Kelly said. “Hemingway will honk or flap his wings if he thinks you’re trying to get between them.”

The friendship between these two bonded animals has sparked interest from all over the country, and adoption inquires have come flooding in. In just a single week, the BCSPCA has received over 300 applications and over a hundred phone calls from hopeful adopters.

As soon as Waffles receives his medical clearance by the veterinary team, the two will then be ready to find their forever home — together.

The two friends have been through so much together, noted Kelly, and they are now looking forward to a much brighter future thanks to one concerned citizen who did the right thing:

“These guys are doing very well and have a good chance at a very happy ending, but it’s only because someone reported their concerns.”.
